As the deadline approaches to register to vote in the November midterm elections, the Texas Democratic Party is urging prospective voters to confirm their registration online and ensure their information is accurate.
The voter registration deadline falls on Oct. 11 and Texas voters have until then to submit their registration application by mail or to, if they’re already registered to vote in the state, update their address online.
“We’re encouraging every Texan to confirm that they are registered at their current address,” said Rose Clouston, director of voter protection for the Texas Democratic Party. “We know that Texans are mobile and move different places and so just go online to RegisterTexas.com in the next few days and confirm that you are registered to vote at your current address.”
RegisterTexas.com is run by the Texas Democratic Party but voters can also verify their registration status at VoteTexas.gov, a website run by the Texas Secretary of State’s office. The Republican Party of Texas also offers their own voter registration form at TexasGOP.org/register-vote/.
While those who are already registered in Texas can change their address online, those who are not already registered in the state can fill out an application online, print it out, and mail it to their county registrar.
The voter registration application must be postmarked by Oct. 11.
“If you have your application postmarked by Oct. 11, you can vote anytime during early voting or on Election Day,” Clouston said.
When it is time to cast their ballot, voters do not need to have their voter registration card in order to vote.
“That is kind of an antiquated notion that we have, that used to be much more important than it is now,” Clouston said, “but now you will be on a list that they see your name on when you go in to vote and be able to just check you off of that list.”
Clouston reiterated that those wanting to vote in the midterm elections should verify they are registered at their current address by Oct. 11.
However, she added that all might not be lost for those who miss the deadline.
“There might still be options for them and so they should call our voter assistance hotline at (844) TX-Votes and we will be able to help them figure out if there are still options for them and if they might be able to vote still,” she said.
For assistance from the Secretary of State’s Office, Texans can also call (800) 252-VOTE.
