COVID-19 hospitalizations continue rising across the Rio Grande Valley, increasing by more than 25% in one week.
As of Thursday, there were 116 COVID-19 hospitalizations across the four counties in the Valley, up by 26% compared to the 92 people hospitalized due to COVID just a week before, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, or DSHS.
From the beginning of June, when there were 50 total patients, to the end of the month, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations jumped by 132%.
The 116 patients in the hospital due to COVID-19 on Thursday included 94 adults, 14 adults in intensive care units, and eight pediatric patients.
As hospitalizations continue to climb across the region, Hidalgo and Cameron counties each reported three deaths caused by COVID-related complications this week.
The three Hidalgo County residents who died were all unvaccinated while the three Cameron County residents who died were fully vaccinated, according to separate news releases issued by the counties.
Hidalgo County now has a total of 3,927 recorded deaths related to COVID-19, though it’s unclear how many total COVID-related deaths have been reported in Cameron County.
Additionally, Hidalgo County reported 2,314 new cases this week. Those included 1,396 confirmed cases and 918 probable cases.
The county is now reporting a total of 210,346 recorded cases in the county. Of those, 134,925 were confirmed, 72,262 were probable, and 3,159 were suspected cases.
Cameron County health officials reported 1,993 new cases this week which include 881 confirmed cases, 1,070 probable, and 42 self-reported cases from at-home tests.
Meanwhile, Starr County had 44 confirmed cases and 38 probable cases this week, according to DSHS data. Willacy County reported 41 confirmed cases and 33 probable cases.
