Trustees on the McAllen Independent School District Board voted in Tony Forina as their board president at the board reorganization Wednesday.

Forina was the sole nomination for the slot and trustees at the meeting voted unanimously for him.

Forina, who’s already served one term as president of the board, thanked fellow trustees and the community.

“We stand on the shoulders of all of our staff, whether it be administration, whether it be the teachers, whether it be the bus drivers, the janitors, the police officers. We cannot accomplish what we do without them,” he said. “So first off, a heartfelt thank you to everybody that is involved in the McAllen ISD family. It is a great family; we respect and honor each and every one of you every day.”

The board also voted in Debbie Crane-Aliseda as vice-president and Marco Suarez as secretary.

Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez presented outgoing board president Sam Saldivar Jr. with a plaque and noted achievements made by the district during his term.

“His service as president of the board during the 21-22 school year occurred during one of the most challenging times in the history of the district. The school year began with our community still currently in the grip of the worst global pandemic in a century,” Gonzalez said. “His leadership guided us through these troubled and uncertain times, and it was a school year that culminated with a series of extraordinary achievements.”
