EDINBURG — A jury on Tuesday found 37-year-old Gabino Salinas guilty of a brutal 2017 killing.

Salinas, who has been in trial since last week, was convicted of killing 32-year-old Edinburg resident Jose Angel Martinez on Nov. 8, 2017.

The jury found Salinas guilty of capital murder and possession of marijuana after approximately three-and-a-half hours of deliberation.

He had also been charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping, but state District Judge Rose Guerra Reyna dismissed the charges Monday because the date of the allegations were wrong in the indictment.

Salinas was charged along with Benjamin Chavez Sanchez, 25, Sandy Lutz, 32, and Hector Ruben Guerra, 48. All suspects face charges of capital murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated kidnapping.

Sentencing will be scheduled for Salinas on Monday.
