Mission murder suspect arrested on drunk driving allegations, released

Ricardo Adrian Mata

A murder suspect from Mission who was out on bond has been arrested for drunk driving.

Ricardo Adrian Mata, 32, was out on bond on a charge relating to the murder of Leonardo Veliz, 22, and the shooting of Emmanuel Veliz, 23, who survived.

Leonardo and Emmanual are brothers from Peñitas.

Alongside Mata, Jose Maria Victoria, 22, and Obed Peña, 28, are also accused of murder and remain jailed.

Jose Maria Victoria and Obed Peña

According to jail and court records, Mata was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Friday which resulted in state District Judge Fernando Mancias removing Mata from a supervisory program that allows a defendant to remain out on bond pending the resolution of their case.

However, it’s not immediately clear whether his $100,000 bonds on charges of murder and capital murder of multiple persons have been revoked.

Jail records show that Mata was released from the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on Jan. 7 on the driving while intoxicated charge after posting a $1,000 bond.

The shooting happened on Oct. 14, 2021, following an armed confrontation at a Mission Stripes.

After that confrontation, the brothers chased Victoria and Peña to the area of 6 Mile Line and Bentsen Palm Drive, which is where the brothers were hit by gunfire that ended when a friend of theirs shot back at Victoria and Peña, according to probable cause affidavits.

The affidavit for Mata’s arrest on the charges alleges that he was present in a third vehicle, a silver Chevrolet truck seen driving away from the scene of the shooting.

Victoria and Peña remain jailed on $500,000 and $2 million in bonds, respectfully.
