A law enforcement investigation is ongoing after a false report of shots being fired at McAllen High School briefly placed the campus in a “secure” status Tuesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the district said the city police department received the report via a call from a non-956 area code at 12:30 p.m.
“Campus-assigned McAllen ISD police officers responded immediately. In an abundance of caution, additional officers also responded to McHi,” a message sent to parents and staff said. The school was placed into a secure status as “district police officers performed a campus sweep as a precaution,” the statement continued.
The district lifted the secure status for the campus at 12:56 p.m., a spokesperson said.
Everything appeared fairly normal at the campus a little after 1 p.m., although a significant amount of law enforcement vehicles were present around campus, including a district police department emergency management vehicle.
The message from the district said other high schools were also checked for threats as a precaution.
“All students & staff are safe,” it reads.
