Hidalgo County officials on Thursday reported 29 people tested positive for COVID-19, the lowest number of reported cases for the county this week.
In addition to the 29 cases, county officials also reported two deaths related to the virus: an Edinburg man and a McAllen woman — both in their 60s — which slightly increased Hidalgo County’s fatality toll to 2,896.
On Monday, Hidalgo County reported 51 people tested positive for the virus, followed by 133 cases Tuesday and 110 cases Wednesday.
Of the 29 new cases reported by the Health and Human Services Department, 15 were confirmed, 10 probable and four suspected.
The majority of cases reported Thursday were led by youth younger than 19, with a total of nine cases. Young adults in their 20s were the next-highest group reported Thursday, with a total of eight cases. Adults in their 40s trailed behind with four cases.
The total number of cases reported in Hidalgo County is 92,496. Of that total, 60,425 were confirmed, 29,884 probable and 2,187 suspected.
According to a release from the county, a total of 474 cases are active.
Officials also reported 78 people were hospitalized in county hospitals, with 24 patients in intensive care units.
Additionally, the county reported 51 individuals were released from isolation Thursday, increasing that total to 89,126.
As of Thursday, a total of 524,724 COVID-19 tests had been administered in Hidalgo County, with 431,427 results returning negative.
In Cameron County, officials reported a total of 39 positive COVID-19 cases Thursday and one death related to the virus, according to a county news release.
The death reported Thursday was a Brownsville man in their 60s, slightly increasing the county’s death toll to 1,678.
Of the 39 cases reported Thursday, Cameron County officials noted 16 cases were from facilities housing unaccompanied minors, such as shelters and detention centers.
All 16 cases reported from the facilities were youth between the ages of 10-19.
The remaining 23 positive cases in Cameron County outside the aforementioned facilities were led by young adults in their 20s with 7 cases, followed by the next age group of those in their 30s with six cases.
As of Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Cameron County is 41,812.
Additionally, the county also reported 40 individuals recovered from the virus on Thursday, increasing that total to 39,426.
As for vaccination efforts, Cameron County officials said 60.99 percent of their 12 and older population are fully vaccinated, with 73.21 percent receiving at least one dose.
The county also reported that 79.39 percent of their 65 or older population is fully vaccinated, with 87.82 percent receiving at least one dose.
