HARLINGEN — Former Harlingen High School football player Lesley Maurice Hunter died in the early morning hours of Oct. 26 after a week of being in critical condition following a stabbing, according to a press release by the Harlingen Police Department.
On Oct. 17 at approximately 2 a.m., Harlingen police officers arrived at the 3200 block of N. 77 Sunshine Strip and found Hunter bleeding on the side of the road conscious but in critical condition, the release stated.
According to police, Hunter told officers a man entered his residence and began an altercation, when he was stabbed multiple times. He was transported to the hospital for further treatment, police said.
After conducting interviews to identify the suspects, warrants were issued for Juan Zapata Lozano, Eduardo Aceves, and Angel Yzaguirre Pizano.
Police said the men were arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and engaging in organized criminal activity.
Now, they are being charged with 1st degree felony murder and will be arraigned in the next few days, according to police.
Cameron County Precinct 4 Commissioner Gus Ruiz expressed his condolences on Facebook.
“Leslie Maurice ‘Mo’ Hunter is known to many Harlingen Cardinal Football fans as one of the greatest running backs Harlingen had ever seen. The office of Commissioner Gus Ruiz would like to share our condolences with his family as he lost his life today,” Ruiz’s statement read.
“In a record-setting 1994 season, Mo Hunter accumulated 41 touchdowns and 2,524 rushing yards, only 36 yards away from the Texas State Rushing Title. It was also the most rushing yards by anyone in the Rio Grande Valley that year by over 1,400. He also set the Valley’s single game rushing record in 1994 against Weslaco, rushing for 366 yards. The Cardinals finished at 9-0-1 that season with Mo leading the way, eventually falling to Converse Judson in the 5A State Playoffs,” Ruiz further stated.
