Hispanic Heritage Month: Harlingen library to host virtual art contest

HARLINGEN — From paintings and drawings to sculptures, local artists have the chance to showcase their artwork and enter a raffle for art supplies.

As part of its annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, the Harlingen Public Library is seeking submissions for its virtual art contest.

The art show is open to all ages, and submissions must be suitable for a family show. There will be four age groups ranging from baby to adult.

Submitted artwork can be created with any medium.

To enter the contest, participants must submit a photo of their original artwork that’s inspired by Hispanic art or artists, the local community, history and/or culture to [email protected] .

“Through the Virtual Art Show, we hope to showcase the enduring legacy of Hispanic art and artists, and to demonstrate the power of art to connect and uplift us,” library personnel stated.

Library personnel ask that participants take a clear, large picture to ensure clarity. They recommend the photo submission be at least 1,000 by 1,000 pixels.

Additionally, participants’ submissions must include their registration form, which can be found on the library’s website.

Submissions are due by 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5.

Submitted photos will be featured in a virtual art show that will be posted on the library’s Facebook page and YouTube Channel on Thursday, Oct. 8.

In addition to the art contest, the library has been hosting a variety of Hispanic Heritage Month celebration virtual activities this month and will continue to conduct more now through Oct. 16.

From DIY cooking classes that teach viewers how to make pico de gallo and tostadas to bilingual PJ story time, library personnel have created and posted a variety of themed activity videos on the library’s Facebook page.
