HARLINGEN — For nearly five decades, this organization has been conducting live performances for its community, enabling theater enthusiasts to pursue their passion and perfect their skills.
Due to COVID-19, the Harlingen Community Theatre (HCT) has been temporarily closed for business since March 30.
As a result, HCT, like many other nonprofits, have been financially impacted by the pandemic.
In an effort to raise funds for building maintenance and utility fees to keep the organization up and running, HCT will have two fundraisers.
“Fundraising efforts continue to help us pay our monthly bills to maintain the utilities and insurance for our building,” HCT’s website states. “Until it is safe to re-open and perform once again, we have no reliable source of income.”
The first fundraising event, will be held in conjunction with the Panda Express located in Harlingen at 2205 South 77 Sunshine Strip.
On Friday, Aug. 28, 20 percent of event sales at Panda Express will be donated to the HCT. Customers must show a paper or digital version of the event flyer when ordering or enter 315773 in the promo code box during online checkout. To obtain the flyer, visit https://tinyurl.com/y3v78mub .
HCT is celebrating its 47th anniversary on Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 3 to 8 p.m. with a fundraiser held in conjunction with New York Deli. Free cupcakes will be given. Additionally, 20 percent of proceeds made during the event will benefit the HCT.

As of Sunday, HCT personnel stated there are no future plans for re-opening the theatre in the next few months.
“The continuing questions as to when can we safely re-open and what show or shows can we safely and economically produce remains to be our biggest concern,” the website states. “Large cast shows are definitely out, for now.”
Small and medium cast shows, where actors are able to use social distanced blocking on stage, as well as radio plays are being considered. Outdoor performances are a possibility when the weather is cooler, the website states.
“We hope you understand our hesitation to re-open and will continue offering your support in any way you can,” the website states. “When we are able to safely re-open, we hope you will be ready to purchase tickets and come see a show.”
