New York Deli to help United Way of Northern Cameron County

HARLINGEN — On its 10th anniversary, the Stuff the Bus outreach program of the United Way of Northern Cameron County has changed because of COVID-19.

Instead of having physical donation boxes, the organization has partnered with New York Deli of Harlingen, located at 122 N. A St. A portion of the purchases made Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. will be used to help families in need.

Kathy Preddy, Resource Development Director, said over the years thousands of school-aged children have been helped.

The program focuses on creating funds and donating supplies, which are given directly to school districts in Cameron County. School districts have programs in place to best identify students in need, Preddy said.

“Now more than ever, more parents and students are facing financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Help us help them; a little goes a long way,” Preddy said.

“As little as $5 will purchase pencil sharpeners for five students; $10 will purchase earphones for online learning; and $20 could fill a backpack,” she said.
