County testing for COVID-19 operated by the Texas Military Department continued on Monday morning at the Los Indios Community Building, serving residents of western Cameron County.
At each event, testing staff administers approximately 125 tests, collects results, and transports samples to labs across the area for processing. The service is free and open to the public.
In Los Indios, a small line of cars waited at noon just past the police department. A member of the testing staff confirmed that capacity had not yet been reached, in contrast to other testing days in larger cities, where patients faced waits of one to two hours in vehicles.
The latest number of COVID-19 cases provided by Cameron County Public Health on Saturday indicated 7,827 total documented positive cases. Of that number, 3,223 COVID patients had recovered, while the county documented 177 deaths.
That number is expected to rise as officials catch up with a backlog due to the recent surge in cases and a higher number of deaths at local hospitals than what had been reported.
Those who think they might have COVID are urged to self-quarantine at home and seek testing. Currently, the City of Brownsville offers free COVID screening through btxcares.com.
UTRGV is operating testing sites in Brownsville, Harlingen, and Edinburg. Those interested in the service should visit uthealthrgv.org and request a phone screening.
Residents with access to health insurance can also access testing through primary care physicians.
