Virtual Fitness: Harlingen Parks and Rec to have gift card giveaway

HARLINGEN — Although the coronavirus pandemic has caused changes for some people’s exercise routines, fitness enthusiasts are able to do workout classes from their own home.

The Harlingen Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the SNAP-Ed Texas and Tu Salud Si Cuenta programs, will have an HEB gift card giveaway for participants of its virtual fitness classes.

To become eligible for the giveaway, participants must be following the Harlingen Parks and Recreation Facebook page at https://tinyurl.com/y3p3cphr .

Additionally, participants must share the class they’re participating in and tag Harlingen Parks and Recreation. Then, in the comments section of their post, they must share a photo of themselves participating in the class.

Participants have 17 classes to choose from. Each class counts as an entry, which gives participants the opportunity to collect a maximum of 17 entries per week.

Classes are held virtually Monday through Friday. The workouts include — yoga, zumba, pilates, stretch and tone, boot camp and chair exercise. Classes can be viewed on the Harlingen Parks and Recreation Facebook page.

According to Parks and Recreation community health worker Christina Mendiola, the fitness classes began shifting from in-person to online starting in January.

“When COVID hit, we decided along with the program called Tu Salud Si Cuenta and the UT Health System to go ahead and do online per the ordinance and things that were happening,” Mendiola said. “We asked all of our instructors to move into that format and we’ve had a lot of response to it so it’s been working really well.”

The gift cards will be given during the next few months and will start on Aug. 3.

A winner will be selected on the last Friday of each month.

For questions about the giveaway, contact Mendiola at (956) 367-3101 or (956) 216-5164.
