SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — One of this coastal city’s main boulevard’s is going to receive a facelift and city officials are seeking input for its desired design.
An open house meeting will be held on Wednesday by the City of South Padre Island to gain input from the community regarding the reconstruction of Laguna Boulevard, which is on the bayside of the Island.
The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Hall, which is located at 4601 Padre Blvd.
Maps, drawings and other information about the project will be on display to show potential design concepts.
According to city officials, the purpose of the meeting is to offer an opportunity for the public to discuss and make comments regarding the project.
“The community is encouraged to attend and to examine the project in greater detail,” SPI public works director Carlos A. Sanchez said. “This meeting will provide an opportunity to be involved, suggest priorities and strategies.”
During a city council workshop held on July 15, Sanchez presented different design options for the project.
According to Sanchez, there are about 315 existing palm trees on Laguna Boulevard.
Sanchez said if “option 4” were selected, about 55 of those palm trees would need to be relocated.
“Based on all of the conflicts, option four seems like a viable option,” he said. “That way when there is no area where you can put a sidewalk, they can go on the bike lane and you’re trying to also save some of those palm trees that are there.”
Project personnel will be on site to assist in the orientation and interpretation of drawings and other material, as well as to discuss the possible design and effects of the project.
