SAN BENITO — As the business community continues to adjust during this time of pandemic, local officials and organizations have been recognizing the efforts being made to help keep the public safe.
The San Benito Code Compliance Division and San Benito Chamber of Commerce created a “San Benito Safe” initiative, which recognizes businesses that have implemented new health and safety standards for their employees and customers.
However, the code compliance division and the Chamber of Commerce decided on Wednesday to halt the “San Benito Safe” initiative due to the increase in positive cases of the coronavirus.
San Benito Safe features tip sheets and in-depth guidelines for restaurants, retail businesses and service agencies to follow and build consumer confidence.
Businesses that registered for the program were required to have met certain criteria to receive a “safe” designation.
Participating businesses received a decal and certificate to display at their businesses.
Additionally, the “safe” designated businesses have been listed on the city’s website, as well as on the Chamber of Commerce’s website and Facebook page.
The program was announced on May 15 and began in June.
According to Chamber of Commerce executive director Dafne Maldonado, close to 30 businesses have participated in the program so far.
A press release from the Chamber of Commerce states that they understand these are hard times and feel they need to protect the community by following Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order, as well as Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. ‘s second amended emergency management order, which will be in place now through July 13.
“We do plan to resume the San Benito Safe program by then unless the orders have been extended or modified,” the press release states. “Please stay safe, wear facial coverings, practice good hygiene and avoid gatherings.”
