SB High School announces plan for graduation ceremony

SAN BENITO — Although students didn’t experience a traditional end of the school year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Greyhound’s graduating Class of 2020 will still be able to have their final send-off together before entering the next chapter of their lives.

San Benito High School issued its Class of 2020 commencement exercises guidelines this past week.

The announcement addresses details that aim to assist graduates and their parents during the commencement, which will be held on Friday, June 12, at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

“Graduation from high school marks an important milestone for students and parents alike,” San Benito High School Principal Cristina Sandoval stated in the announcement. “The SBHS class of 2020 has already accomplished great things, with many more to follow.”

Sandoval stated that teachers, staff and administrators are determined to do everything they can to make the commencement as special and memorable as they envisioned all along.

“As you know, the traditional ceremony has been changed due to health and safety concerns regarding the pandemic,” Sandoval stated. “Know that we share your disappointment but look forward to a remarkable evening.”

Details for graduates

According to the announcement, there will not be rehearsals for the commencement exercises.

Social distancing is required at all times, as well as face masks or coverings.

When it is their turn, each row of graduates will line up to receive their diploma and masks may be removed at that time.

Graduates are not allowed to bring any bags or purses into the stadium.

Details for parents

Each graduate will receive two tickets, and vehicles will be limited to only one vehicle per family.

Guests with tickets on the A-side of the stadium will park in the home section parking lot and guests with tickets on the B-side of the stadium will park in the visitor’s parking lot.

Only clear bags or purses will be allowed into the stadium.

Face coverings or masks must be worn by every guest attending the ceremony, as well as maintaining a minimal distance of 6 feet apart from other guests.

Balloons, air-horns, noise makers and flowers will not be allowed into the stadium.

Guests must remain in their seats during the entire program.

“For health and safety reasons, guests will not be allowed to come down the bleachers to take pictures of the graduates,” the announcement states. “Professional photographers will be taking pictures of all students.”

Graduates and guests experiencing new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19 must excuse themselves from the event, as well as those who have had known close contact with a person who has been confirmed by a lab to have COVID-19 exposure to an active, confirmed case that occurred within the past four days before the graduation ceremony.
