Authorities arrested a suspect linked to a shooting incident in Olmito last week in which three victims were injured and transported to the hospital.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department reported on Tuesday that its Criminal Investigation Division was able to arrest Jimmy Cervantes, age unavailable, a fugitive wanted for the offenses of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and injury to a child, according to the department.
According to authorities, Cervantes was accused of shooting Vandiesel Torres and injuring two juveniles at a residence on the corner of Palmito and Gay streets in Olmito on May 13.
Sheriff’s deputies reportedly rushed to the scene upon receiving information about shots fired in the neighborhood.
A statement published by the department on its Facebook page indicated Cervantes was remanded to the Cameron County Jail pending arraignment. Jail records confirmed Cervantes was booked at the facility on May 18. He was held on a $300,000 bond for two aggravated assault charges and the additional charge of injury to a child.
Sheriff Omar Lucio said the shooting followed an altercation over a narcotics purchase in which someone attempted to use counterfeit money.
According to the office, Cervantes produced a firearm during the fight and discharged several rounds, striking Torres and two underage juveniles. The three victims were sent to local hospitals for treatment. The suspects fled in a black Honda Civic, the office stated.
