Rangerville Park ball court is in play

HARLINGEN — Night games are a go at Rangerville Park.

The new lighted basketball court at the park has been playing to crowds for the past month, city Parks and Recreation Department officials said.

The full-sized basketball court has a 5-foot out-of-bounds border. City crews installed a lattice of steel rebar and instead of cheaper asphalt, the court is concrete.

“The lights have been in going on a month,” Armando Villela, city parks superintendent, said at the parks and rec board meeting last week.

The city installed backboards, light poles and lights, and the court is similar to the one at Pendleton Park. It was funded by a Community Development Block Grant.

So far, response from players has been positive, Villela said.

“Pretty good. I’ve been out there on my own time with the kids and it’s getting a lot of usage,” Villela said. “We’ve gotten really good feedback from the public on it.”
