Farmers market ready to party on 10th anniversary

HARLINGEN — The Harlingen Farmers Market is ready for a milestone Saturday as its celebrates its 10th year.

The popular market, which is now in its third year at its present location on Tyler Avenue next to City Hall, is going all-out for its 10th anniversary.

“We have several giveaways,” said Kate McSwain, market manager. “We have a basket filled with treats from our vendors and we’ll be giving that away. We have homemade cake. We have Jose Sanchez as our live music and we’ll be honoring four vendors who originally started with us 10 years ago. They were four of the 10 vendors, and they’re still with us 10 years later.”

The Harlingen market has about two dozen vendors who show up every Saturday between 3 and 4:30 p.m. to show off their wares.

The market sells not just locally raised vegetables but beef, poultry, bread, jams and cheese, as well as locally produced organic soaps and crafts.

The venue is pet friendly and there is no admission charge.

The market has benefitted by relocating to its current location from the historic downtown. Originally founded 10 years at the El Mercado shopping center, the market then found a spot on A Street downtown.

Oh, it’s fabulous,” McSwain said. “Because we’ve got tons of parking, we’re much more visible so we have a lot of new people discovering us and realizing it’s every Saturday and not just once a month.

“Because we’re much more visible, we’ve got so many more people applying who want to be vendors at our market,” she added.
