HARLINGEN — “Let there be peace on Earth, the peace that was meant to be …”
Community leaders sang that iconic song Saturday during a ceremony at Valley International Airport where Rotary Club District 5930’s Governor Ellison Crider dedicated the Rotary Peace Pole.
“May peace be in our schools,” the sign read. “May peace be in the United States, may peace be in our homes, may peace prevail on Earth.”
Crider spoke to the group gathered for the moment, including local Rotarians, Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell, and City Manager Dan Serna.
He explain the purpose of having “Peace Poles” — there are thousands across the world — in schools and cities and universities.
“As people pass by we hope they will start thinking about peace and how we can have peace in our communities,” he said.
Boswell appreciated the symbolic significance of the pole.
“There are a lot of travelers coming by, and it’s a reminder of how important it is for us to work together,” he said.
“I congratulate the Rotary Club for this service.”
Promoting peace in all things is important, said the Rev. Bill Reagan, and putting it in such a prominent place will serve to remind travelers both near and far of its message.
