Constable injured in traffic stop

HARLINGEN — A deputy constable was injured by an alleged drunken driver while he was conducting a traffic stop on Dec. 10, according to the Facebook page of the Precinct 5 Cameron County Constable’s Office.

The deputy sustained injuries and underwent surgery for multiple fractures.

In the Facebook post, the Constable’s Office assured the deputy is doing well but has a long road ahead to recovery.

It also states he is thankful for the support he has received from friends, family, medical staff and multiple law enforcement agencies. The post finishes by reminding residents against drinking and driving.

According the Department of Public Safety, the two people inside the vehicle that had been pulled over also sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the constable’s unit was arrested for DWI, authorities said.

Sgt. Maria Montalvo from DPS said the incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. that night and the driver drove a red Chevrolet Blazer.

According to her, the crash occurred on Expressway 83 eastbound at the Altas Palmas Road exit, just outside of Harlingen.
