Budweiser Clydesdale makes appearance in San Benito

SAN BENITO — It’s a sight most don’t get to see every day.

A 6-year-old Budweiser Clydesdale named Red made a visit to the Walmart in San Benito yesterday afternoon.

Ranging a bit over 6 feet tall, the 1,200-pound Clydesdale made quite a presence for dozens of visitors that eagerly waited in line to meet him and pose for a picture.

Elizabeth De Leon, 22, from Rio Hondo and Israel Garza, 27 from Raymondville were the first ones in line to see Red.

“At first, you don’t think the Clydesdales are very tall, but then once you actually get close to one you realize they’re gigantic,” Garza said with a laugh.

De Leon said she has a passion for horses and had seen the Clydesdales once when she was younger.

“Of all the horse breeds, it’s not too often you get a chance to see a Clydesdale,” she said with a smile. “I admire them so when my boyfriend told me about the event, I was excited to be able to get close to one.”

According to Harlingen L&F Distributors Sales Execution Coordinator Henry Cavazos, the Clydesdales usually travel together, but the majority of them spent yesterday getting showered and ready for their next appearance.

“The Clydesdales are very popular and famous. They’re going to be in the McAllen Holiday parade, but luckily I was able to bring Red to San Benito,” Cavazos said with a laugh and a smile. “Especially since the Clydesdales are well-known for the holidays.”
