Single-vehicle accident leaves child dead

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle accident that has left a young girl dead on Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Eddie Guerra, the accident happened in south Donna on Amatista Street.

The sheriff’s office received a call about the accident at 6:10 p.m.

“I have deputies and my major crime units there,” Guerra said. “It’s on private property, so that’s why we’re investigating it. A child was the only one that was struck by the vehicle.”

The child was reportedly transported to a local hospital, but attempts to save her were unsuccessful.

Guerra also said on Twitter that the child, a 1-year-old girl, was struck by a vehicle driven by her grandfather as he was leaving the property.

“No foul play is suspected and grandfather showed no signs of intoxication. Our condolences to the family,” Guerra said in his tweet.

Additional details were not available as of press time.
