Single vehicle crash sends five to local hospitals

WESLACO — The Texas Department of Transportation is investigating a single vehicle crash which occurred today at approximately 10:50 a.m.

According to a news release, a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop with a green 2004 Ford Explorer on U.S. 281 north of F.M. 490 over a traffic violation.

The driver of the Ford Explorer initially complied and pulled over, but when the sheriff’s deputy attempted to make contact with the driver, he continued driving.

The Ford was traveling northbound on U.S. 281 when it made a turn-around and began traveling southbound on U.S. 281.

It was at this time the driver reportedly lost control of the Ford Explorer and veered off the roadway before striking a tree.

There were a total of five people inside the vehicle.

“We know that they did have major injuries,” explained Sergeant Maria Montalvo, public information officer for the DPS. “We know that one (person) was transported via air-evac. The person that was airlifted was transported to (Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance) with two others, but the other two were ground units. The other two were transported to Rio Grande Regional (Hospital).”

No further information was available at this time as DPS continues its investigation.
