Early College kids rank first in spelling bee

HARLINGEN — It was months of preparation and practice, but well worth it for the spelling bee champions.

Three students from Early College High School took home first place at the Great Killer Bee corporate spelling bee hosted by the Literacy Center of Harlingen on Oct. 3 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.

Seniors Aaron Vidaurri and Daniel Saucedo, plus junior Jehovah Garcia, took home the trophy for this year’s fundraising competition to benefit the Harlingen Literacy Center.

“The students dedicated their time after school for three months, having weekly meetings to practice their spelling efforts,” stated a release from the Harlingen school district.

“We certainly are proud of their hard work and commitment,” stated the release. “The three students are currently on track to graduate from ECHS with up to 50-plus hours of college credit.”

The event, sponsored by Lone Star National Bank, featured in second place the team from the Lions Club and in third place the team from the Law Offices of Jim Young and Anne Denison.
