HARLINGEN — From making new friends to sharing ideas and gaining different parenting skills, a free parenting program is making its way toward Cameron County.
Parent Café, a program for parents and caregivers of young children, will be hosted Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Harlingen Public Library Auditorium.
Attendees will be served breakfast from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and there will be door prizes.
The program will be led by Easterseals Rio Grande Valley, a nonprofit organization based in McAllen that provides home visiting programs for children and their families throughout Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy and Starr counties.
According to Easterseals Rio Grande Valley Community Outreach Liaison Adam Rios, Parent Café aims to promote individual, deep self-reflection by introducing participants to protective factors that strengthen families — resilience, relationships, communication and concrete support.
“We want this to be all about the parents,” he explained. “Together, they can talk about different topics, challenges and joys they may have in their household.”
Rios said this is the first time the Parent Café will be hosted in the Harlingen area.
Due to limited space, attendees are required to call (956) 803-0850 to reserve a spot.
According to organizers, childcare will not be provided and the event is strictly for parents and caregivers.
“In my opinion, I feel like this is an amazing opportunity for parents and caregivers to come together and actually learn from each other,” Rios said. “It gives parents a space to share ideas and gain a little more of the knowledge that they need as parents.”
