Planning for annual Dining by Design fundraiser well underway

HARLINGEN — From a Dr. Seuss inspired table to a decorated Aggie setup, designers are getting ready to decorate their tables for this year’s Dining by Design fundraiser.

For several years, the fundraising event has been held in Harlingen to benefit the American Cancer Society.

According to committee members, more than $106,000 was raised last year.

This year, the event will consist of three different events for guests to attend.

A sneak peek of last minute decorating will be available Oct. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m.

This is the first time a sneak peek has been created, according to the organizers.

“We are trying to raise more money and reach more people, and this Wednesday night event is catered to people that work during the day,” said Teri Youngblood, co-chair for the event.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. guests can see the decorated tables instead of attending the gala.

The gala starts at 6:30 p.m. that night.

Cathi Yarbrough is one of the designers that will be decorating the tables to be showcased.

“We don’t have a category, but we try to encourage individual creative ideas. And it literally could be a table with a children’s party theme and next to it one with a third generation fine china from Germany,” Yarbrough said.

The preparations for the annual fundraiser begin in early May and planning continues throughout the following months before the event.

“We are really excited about the sneak peak, which we have not done it before. This is new, and it’s for people who cannot attend the seated dinner and they get to see the tweaking of the final details,” Yarbrough said.

Cathy Weaver, Community Development Manager from the American Cancer Society, attended a few of the planning meetings and said is grateful about the help.

“The money comes directly to the American Cancer Society, and this is how we pay to all of our free programs,” Weaver said.

“We have free wigs, hats and turbans that we provide to local oncology offices. We provide transportation to their appointments and help with hotel and motel costs if they need assistance in another city,” she said.

The Dining by Design team is asking for those interested in supporting the cause to purchase tickets or to become sponsors.
