SAN BENITO — It’s been a busy and productive month for the Greyhound’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.
So far this school year, 152 cadets have completed a total of 496 community service hours in San Benito.
“The instructors and I are very proud of them,” said San Benito NJROTC Unit Chief Timothy Wilson. “The students are really stepping up this year to prove our motto that NJROTC is the backbone of San Benito.”
Close to 50 cadets spent this past Saturday morning cleaning near Business Highway 77 in San Benito.
Together, they were able to gather more than eight bags of trash.
“We remind our students that we want people to have a good impression of the community when they get off the highway,” Wilson said. “One of the big things people will see is that it’s clean and we truly believe that helps with giving a really good image to the city of San Benito and the community as a whole.”
Earlier this month, more than 80 cadets organized their annual food drive for the San Benito Food Pantry.
Through the food drive, they collected $245 and 657 food items for the pantry.
“Our students, with the help of the community, really came together to help the San Benito Food Pantry,” Wilson said. “Thank you to the community, organizations and businesses for your donations and help in making this year’s food drive a success.”
Wilson said several cadets have already earned their first ribbon in the program because of their participation with these community service events.
“We believe this helps cement the importance of the service over self concept,” he explained. “It also shows them the importance of giving back and being good citizens of their community.”
