HARLINGEN — A new fully ADA-compliant restroom is the latest addition to the city’s Lon C. Hill Park.
The new restroom, which is still under construction, is located just behind the all-inclusive playground at the park and should be finished and ready for use within a few weeks.
“Part of it was the money we got from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, and part of it was from Mr. Koppel (the Rollins M. and Amalie L Koppel Foundation),” Javier Mendez, parks and recreation director, said this week of funding for the project. “That restroom cost us $188,000.”
Part of the reason for the outlay of funds for the Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant restroom at the park is due to the city’s plans for a destination park development in the area.
“We put two toilet fixtures in there because we want it to be 100-percent ADA, and anyone in a wheelchair can access it,” Mendez said. “In the middle we put a family restroom where there are some individuals that are older and they have to have a changing station so we built a massive changing station for them.
“Somebody brought it up at one of our meetings and said y’all need to put this in there, so we designed it that way,” he added.
