HARLINGEN — When you’re staging one of the biggest Texas hunts on federal land, you’re going to need some help.
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is searching for volunteers to help with its hunt check station this fall and winter.
“We are looking for volunteers to assist us with our hunt program at Laguna Atascosa,” said Chris Quezada, visitor services park ranger at the refuge. “The positions consist of staffing and representing the hunt check station, assisting hunters with their game, roving the refuge to ensure safety signage is in place and reporting illegal activity to law enforcement.”
Volunteers will be needed who can assist U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel for two to three months, Quezada added.
The hunt stations are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but volunteers are only required to put in eight-hour shifts, he said.
“I am not sure if this is the largest state public land hunt but it is the largest state federal land hunt,” Quezada said.
Laguna Atascosa permit-only gun hunts will be available this fall on Units 2, 3, 5 and 8 only. Gun hunting dates are Dec. 6-8, 13-15, 20-22 and Jan. 3-5 and 10-12.
Archery hunts at Laguna, also permit-only, will be conducted in units 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 only. Hunt dates are Oct. 25-29, Nov. 1-5, Nov. 15-19 and Nov. 22-26.
