Sea Turtle, Inc., SPI KATS to host end of summer beach cleanup

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Local organizations are teaming up to help clear debris from the beach this weekend.

Sea Turtle, Inc., in conjunction with SPI KATS, will host an end of summer beach cleanup Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon at Isla Blanca Park.

The cleanup is hosted with support from the NOAA Marine Debris Prevention Program and Scott Friedman.

Cleanup items such as trash bags, gloves, water and snacks will be provided.

Registration will take place in front of the Sea Ranch Restaurant and Bar on the Island, where participants can receive their cleanup supplies and pass into Isla Blanca Park.

Participants are encouraged to wear sunscreen and comfortable clothing.

Additionally, students in need of service hours are encouraged to attend and should take their forms to be signed.

Door prizes will be raffled off to participants.

Event organizers said donating time to the event even just for a few hours can be a great help.

“You can come during any time of the cleanup and you don’t have to stay the whole time,” said Kat Lillie, Sea Turtle, Inc.’s Assistant Curator. “Basically, it’s really important that we make small, little donations and changes because a lot of people doing little things can really make a big difference.”

Event organizers said they hope as many people as possible stop by to help pick up trash and help keep the beach clean.

“We love seeing volunteers and we love having community support so it’s just a really positive thing for our beach,” Lillie said.
