HARLINGEN — Adrian Garcia, 28, was arraigned Monday morning and charged with murder after a weekend argument about fighting roosters led to a fatal shooting.
Bond was set at $1 million.
Garcia is accused of killing his co-worker Ezequiel Garza, 59, of Mercedes.
According to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, both men were drinking beer at a residence located on 24811 Bass Blvd. Saturday at around 5:30 p.m.
The men were working on fixing the roof of the residence and drank along with the owner, who went inside the house at 11 p.m.
Around 5 a.m. Sunday morning, the owner heard gunshots and sent another worker to check.
Garza was then found in his vehicle with a gunshot wound to his chest, Lucio reported.
According to Lucio, the pair had been discussing about fighting roosters, and then got into an argument about whose rooster was better.
Garcia asked Garza for money for the hypothetical rooster fight and then shot him.
Authorities contacted a witness who confirmed Garcia had done the shooting.
Garcia fled the scene and attempted to hide the .22 rifle used to shoot Garza.
Authorities eventually found Garcia around the neighborhood, where he admitted to shooting Garza and showed them where the weapon was hidden.
According to Lucio, Garcia gave a full confession Monday morning.
