Memories condensed: Rio Hondo Public Library celebrates 40th anniversary

RIO HONDO — A week-long celebration full of festivities, story time and arts and crafts mark the Rio Hondo Public Library’s 40th anniversary.

The celebration comes to an end Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that includes a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. to recreate the original inauguration of the library. Food and artisan vendors will be on site, as well as scavenger hunts and bingo games.

The main surprise is a time capsule activity where people will be able to place their memories and special items. The capsule will reopen in 40 years.

“We are excited to be celebrating with the community and we invite all of the people of Rio Hondo to participate,” Ben Medina, City Administrator, said.

“We encourage people to bring their items to the time capsule and be a part of this memorable moment,” he said.

Carolyn Dawson, head librarian, mentioned they will also be inaugurating a new student study room that had been in the works for six months.

Joan Reiss, the original librarian, also will be a special guest at the ceremony.

“We will be recreating the original picture we took 40 years ago, and we hope to gather as many of the first guests as we can to remember this date,” Medina said.
