Huge two-day job fair at Chamber begins today

HARLINGEN — A massive job fair seeking to fill 450 positions is starting this morning for a two-day run at the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce.

Today and tomorrow, the Career Fair will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers are seeking to fill positions including medical assistant, paraprofessional, youth care workers and more at starting wages of between $12 and $14 per hour.

Wayne Lowry is CEO of a new startup company, SOG International, a staffing and facility management company.

“We have at this point one major client which is requesting a total of close to 600 jobs that we’re going to be providing,” Lowry said yesterday “At this particular job fair we’re targeting some of the highest-need and highest-volume positions. We’re going to be bringing on and on-boarding about 450 hopefully in the next couple of months so we can have a full ramp-up date of Nov. 1 to have an adequate amount of staff for our client.”

Lowry declined to reveal the name of his company’s client but said the jobs available will be in the medical field.

“We’re looking for people that have some medical experience,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be an LVN (licensed vocational nurse) or RN (registered nurse),” he said. “We will be hiring and bring on some LVNs as we get closer to the startup.

“But right now we’re looking for medical assistants, individuals that may have some sort of certificate that shows they have some training in that general area,” he said. “And that’s going to be kind of our key priority to bring them on and start training in preparation for the launch date for our client.”

Job candidates who show up at the Chamber should bring a resume and be dressed for an interview.

“We will have multiple booths where our HR and recruiting professionals will be conducting interviews, and we hope to make job offers on the spot,” Lowry said. “We’ve got a lot of needs to fill and we want to get staffed up as soon as possible.”
