Scammers using Harlingen Fire Department name to steal money

HARLINGEN — Local residents are being targeted by scammers claiming to be with the Harlingen Fire Department and asking for monetary donations to help Harlingen residents affected by the June 24 flooding.

Officials are advising that the Harlingen Fire Department is not collecting money for flood victims.

The calls are from a local number. The City of Harlingen encourages anyone who gets a call from these unscrupulous individuals to not fall for their scam.

Harlingen Fire Chief Roy Rubio said “it’s a shame” that there are individuals who try to take advantage of people’s generosity in times of emergencies. He encourages anyone who gets such a call to hang up and report it to the Harlingen Police on emergency number (956) 216-5940.

As a reminder, FEMA does not charge for their services either, so if someone comes by your home claiming they will inspect your home for a price, say no and call the police.
