SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Being a resident of the Island for more than 20 years, Patrick McNulty says it was his love and passion for his community that inspired him to run for mayor.
And based on the results of his campaign, it’s clear the Island community saw him fit to take the reins of the resort town and guide them through these next couple of years.
McNulty was sworn in to City Council Wednesday, and led his first council meeting as South Padre Island’s new mayor.
“ As Dennis Stahl’s successor, I hope to be the anchor and continue the projects that are in the works,” McNulty said during the City Council meeting. “Many great projects have been completed, but with this great council, our great city staff and this wonderful community, I know we will continue to leave South Padre Island a better place for future generations to enjoy.”
McNulty described his time campaigning as being “the most intense experience” he’s ever had.
“ I think it was an excellent opportunity to meet our many neighbors and understand the concerns for all that makes up our wonderful Island,” he said.
Even though McNulty has recently acquired his title as mayor, he is no stranger to being involved with city government.
He is currently chairman of the Island’s Planning and Zoning Commission, and is a member of the Shoreline Task Force, Interview Committee and Planning Director and Comprehensive Plan Committee.
According to McNulty, his long-term goals and priorities as mayor include working on Laguna Boulevard restoration, sports tourism, joining the metropolitan planning organization and medical amenities to the community.
“ When we work together, we can accomplish so much more,” he said. “I hope to see the community continue to work together to achieve our goal of making the Island the best it can be.”
