A traffic stop by the Brownsville Police Department turned into a federal investigation after officers said they spotted a little more than three pounds of methamphetamine in plain view.
A criminal complaint against 50-year-old Antonio Cabrera Cavazos, of Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, and Harlingen resident Ramiro Mendoza-Rendon, born in 1968, charges the men with possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.
On Monday, the BPD initiated the traffic stop, though the criminal complaint doesn’t detail why, on the Chevrolet Tahoe the men were in when police noticed an H-E-B grocery bag with a single container wrapped in plastic on the floorboard in the rear passenger compartment in plan view.
The criminal complaint doesn’t state whether the BPD gained consent to search the vehicle, but says authorities tested the contents of the container and determined it was methamphetamine.
This is the third methamphetamine bust in July detailed in public federal criminal complaints. So far five people have been charged in those cases and the total amount of methamphetamine contained in all those complaints is approximately 243 pounds.
Both men are being held without bond pending probable cause and detention hearings scheduled for July 12 at 8:30 a.m. in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya III.
