HARLINGEN — Since the thunderstorm struck the Rio Grande Valley hard, members of the local church and ministry center El Valle District have united to help those in need by giving them free buckets.
Iris Saenz, program and ministry assistant, said the idea of handing out buckets in scenarios like these was already established in their global program.
“We hand them out, the bucket with the items needed to begin the cleaning process,” Saenz said.
“We work alongside a company in Kerrville that provides us with enough items to give out to all the people that were suffering.”
The storm started on Monday evening and by the time it began, according to Saenz, the coordinator of the ministry Cindy Moore gave her a call to begin the process of receiving the buckets.
By Wednesday the group was receiving the buckets and was able to distribute 487 all around Harlingen, Santa Rosa, Mercedes and La Feria.
Another shipment was received on Thursday and that same day 250 were distributed as well.
Depending on the severity and the need for more, they will continue to ask for more shipments.
Saenz said they also have been working diligently to help families that need to buy groceries, do laundry and get work done on their homes.
