Local nonprofits start recovery efforts

HARLINGEN — From soaked furniture to unrecoverable house appliances, high levels of floodwaters caused by the recent heavy storm created havoc for several families.

Now, in the wake of flooding, several local organizations are stepping up to provide aid to the affected families.

Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley created a Disaster Relief Needs Survey to request funding that will assist with the Valley’s flood recovery efforts.

“The more information we get, the quicker and easier it is for us to assist in the long term recovery,” said Habitat for Humanity RGV Executive Director Wayne Lowry. “There are a lot of families out there with devastating needs and we need people to fill out the survey so we can solicit donations to bring relief to all residents that have suffered from this devastating flood.”

According to Habitat for Humanity RGV Development Director Amy Sepulveda, more than 350 families affected by recent flooding have taken the survey so far.

Sepulveda said about 90 percent of families who submitted a response reported water in their homes.

Additionally, families reported having damage to their walls, furniture and roofs due to the storm.

According to Sepulveda, flood damage repairs cost about $5,000 per family.

She said the nonprofit’s goal is to receive $500,000 in funding.

Cleaning supplies needed

The United Way of Northern Cameron County, in conjunction with The Rotary Club of Harlingen, is collecting cleaning supplies for local flood victims.

Cleaning supplies needed include: air fresheners, mosquito spray, latex gloves, bleach, work gloves, 5-gallon buckets, face masks, household cleaners, scouring pads, clothes pins, scrub brushes, clothesline, sponges, laundry detergent, towels, dish soap and trash bags.

Donated items will be distributed through the Rotary Disaster Aid program to those in need.

The organizations are currently working with city officials to determine which areas need assistance with home cleanups.

According to United Way of Northern Cameron County Executive Director Jessica Belschner, there will be future volunteer opportunities in assisting flood victims.

“Some items have already been donated since the collection began Wednesday,” Belschner said. “It’s such a blessing to see all of these different communities, city officials and leaders coming together to get everybody the help they need.”
