Severe thunderstorm warnings for Cameron, Hidalgo counties

Areas of Harlingen and San Benito were hit by heavy rains for a short time tonight, while other areas of Cameron County remained dry.

From the city’s west side near the Harlingen Country Club to Business 77, the rain fell across Harlingen. In San Benito, residents along Business 77 saw strong storms.

AEP Texas is reporting power outages across the Valley, with the heaviest outages in the Upper Valley.

* At 738 PM CDT, National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain occurring across much of Western Willacy, Northwestern Cameron and eastern Hidalgo Counties. From 3 to 5 inches of rain have fallen within the
warning area and additional rainfall is expected. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include … Weslaco, San Juan, Alamo, Donna, Mercedes, Raymondville and La Feria.

* At 456 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Norias, or 10 miles southwest of Armstrong, moving south at 15 mph.

HAZARD…70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball size hail.

IMPACT…People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect considerable tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to
mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.
