SAN BENITO — As another school year comes to a close, all-around improvements are in store for the district.
During recent school board meetings, San Benito CISD administration discussed its recent academic achievements and future structural remodeling.
Infrastructure projects
San Benito CISD plans to create a façade for San Benito High School and Sullivan Elementary.
According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nate Carman, the facades are “just now being designed and likely won’t be complete until spring of 2020.”
Other resurfacing projects are currently in the works and are estimated to be completed sooner.
The district plans to resurface parking areas, add an additional parking lot and construct a concrete bus loop at the high school, which should be finished by the end of July according to Carman.
Lastly, the high school’s 24-year-old outdoor furniture is estimated to be replaced before the next school year begins in August.
School recognition
Besides infrastructure improvements, the district also seems to be making academic improvements.
Earlier this week, Dr. C.M. Cash and Rangerville Elementary Schools were recognized as 2018-2019 Texas Honor Roll schools by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP), a nonprofit organization.
ERP’s program is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes.
The recognition highlights high-performing, achievement gap-closing schools across Texas.
Dr. C.M. Cash Elementary and Rangerville Elementary Schools are two of 855 Texas public schools to be recognized.
This is the second year in a row Dr. C.M. Cash has been named a Texas Honor Roll school.
Projected TEA Grade
Carman projected the district’s Texas Education Agency (TEA) Accountability Rating during a regular board meeting held this week.
Using data of the district’s College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR), 2018 graduation rate and State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) assessments, the district projects it will receive an 86, which translates into a B letter grade.
“ Huge increases across the board,” Carman said during the meeting. “I think things are going in the right direction.”
If the district receives an 86, it will be a 12 point increase from prior scores.
In the 2016-2017 school year, San Benito CISD received a 74.
The following school year, the district received a 78.
During the meeting, School Board President Michael A. Vargas said the projected score is a “huge deal in terms of where they were.”
“ Especially now that we’re always preaching the gold standard, professional development, our administrators and what have you,” he added. “I think we’re finally arriving at that academically, which is what we’ve been striving for.”
According to Carman, the district will have a detailed report of its TEA rating in July.
