Woman indicted, accused of tampering with government records

A woman accused of using fake insurance cards to obtain temporary license plates briefly appeared in court Monday afternoon and pleaded not guilty.

Diana C. Garza waived the reading of a 10-count indictment that charges her with tampering with a government record.

Brownsville Police Department spokeswoman Melissa Gonzalez said last November that authorities arrested and charged Garza and her boyfriend Francisco Montes in connection to an investigation at the Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office.

Montes is charged with six counts of tampering with a government record and is scheduled for arraignment June 25, court records indicate.

A Cameron County grand jury issued indictments against Garza and Montes on May 22.

Garza is accused of using the fake insurance cards 10 times between Oct. 25 and 29 in 2018 while Montes is accused of using the false documents six times on Oct. 25 and 26 in 2018.

Both suspects are free on bail, court records show.
