PORT ISABEL — The sweltering Saturday morning sun steadily beat down on Tarpon Stadium as Port Isabel played host to the second annual Noble Charities Texas Legends football clinic.
Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Billy Joe Dupree, cornerbacks Everson Walls and Larry Brown, and wide receiver Tony Hill led the campers through drills modeled after those done at the NFL combine. Hill partnered with his friend, La Feria-based Noble Texas Builders and Noble Charities founder Rene Capistran, and the Point Isabel ISD coaching staff to run the event.
Brown, the Super Bowl XXX MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion, played in college at Texas Christian University. Walls, a Richardson native, was a four-time Pro-Bowler and three-time firstteam All-Pro defensive back. Dupree and Hill were teammates on the 1977 Cowboys squad that was victorious in Super Bowl XII.
“Our whole thing in this camp is not who’s the biggest or who’s the fastest,” Hill said. “It’s who gives their best effort.”
Hill began getting involved in charity work in 1990, long before he met Capistran. He created a company called Legends Sports Promotions, and allowed athletes to volunteer and receive sponsorships on behalf of various charitable causes.
Capistran made Hill’s acquaintance at a golf tournament about one decade ago, and the two quickly became friends and business partners, holding camps across Texas. The Brownsville native brought the first Texas Legends camp to La Feria last year, and searched around the Rio Grande Valley for their next host.
