Battle monument to be dedicated at Palo Alto site

HARLINGEN — A monument to American troops who fought at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma will be dedicated at its new resting place at Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park.

The June 15 ceremony at 10 a.m. will mark the change in location for the monument, which has been moved about five miles north on Paredes Line Road.

The four-foot-tall granite monument was put in place by the Lt. Thomas Barlow Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution to commemorate one of the battles in what is now Brownsville during the Mexican-American War. It was placed along Paredes Line Road at the front of the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield in 1931.

The growth of the City of Brownsville, and the heavy traffic at its former location on Paredes Line Road, made its old location a safety issue, park officials say.

The move north is about five miles, but still within the general area where the Battle of Resaca de la Palma was believed to have been fought.

The Resaca de la Palma Battlefield unit is a barebones historical site, with restrooms, a walking trail, interpretive waysides and a picnic area. Gates are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and entry is free.

The site was recently put under the umbrella of the Palo Alto National Historical Battlefield Park. The Battle of Palo Alto was fought on May 8, 1846, one day before the fight at Resaca de la Palma.

Addresses from representatives of the Lt. Thomas Barlow Chapter of the DAR as well as officials from the Palo Alto battlefield will be delivered on the day of the dedication.
