VA to host Veterans Whole Health Summit

HARLINGEN — A mental and physical health care program that aims to help veterans reach their envisioned healthiest lifestyle is making its way into the Valley.

The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System (VCB) will host its first Whole Health Summit and Fair at its center Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Attendees will learn about the VCB’s Whole Health System and the benefits of Tai Chi, improved sleep, acupuncture, pain management and chiropractic care.

Additionally, yoga, meditation, relaxation and guided imagery demonstration classes will be held.

Refreshments will be served and prizes will be given during the Whole Health Summit and Benefits Fair.

According to VCB Health Behavior Coordinator John A. Miller, the goal of the event is to ensure all eligible veterans and their family members have a clear understanding of how comprehensive integrated Whole Health services will contribute to their development of self-empowering, self-healing and self-care behaviors.

“We are looking forward to a large number of attendees who will become as excited as our staff about the life changing health practices that are becoming available to them through the implementation of Whole Health services,” Miller said.

What is the Whole Health System?

The Whole Health System is an initiative that aims to promote veterans’ health and well-being.

According to Miller, the Whole Health approach doesn’t just partner with veterans.

Rather, it focuses on improving veterans’ whole health by addressing mind and body issues prevalent in complex conditions such as chronic pain and the “invisible wounds of war.”

“When fully implemented, Whole Health is a reorientation of the Veteran’s relationship with the VA,” Miller said. “It combines our current and always evolving state-of-the-art conventional healthcare with personalized health planning and innovative self-care utilizing complementary integrative health services.”
