SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Kids with a passion for science and a love for sea turtles will be able to experience what it’s like to be a veterinary technician this summer.
Sea Turtle Inc. recently opened registration for its Be a Vet summer kids program for children ages 7 through 12.
The program will demonstrate steps taken when a new sea turtle patient is brought into Sea Turtle Inc.’s hospital.
Participants will work with mock-up plastic sea turtles and learn how to treat a variety of cases such as shell injuries, missing flippers and turtles with fishing hooks.
Sea Turtle Inc. Marketing and Public Relations Manager Sanjuana Zavala said it’s great to see children be inspired to learn more about sea turtles and become stewards of the ocean.
“I really enjoy seeing the kiddos be emerged in what they’re doing whether it’s using the instruments, wearing their lab coats or reading about sea turtles,” Zavala said. “Seeing them run to their parents and telling them they know what they want to be when they grow up is really neat to see.”
Sea Turtle Inc. will host 11 Be a Vet program sessions, which will be held June 15, 20, 22, 27, 29 and July 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27.
Registration costs $26 and will include a one-hour long program facilitated by a Sea Turtle Inc. educator, a sea turtle plush and a sea turtle release certificate.
Preregistration is required and cancellation refunds will not be offered.
