The Cameron County Historical Commission is meeting today at 2:30 p.m. at the Downtown Harlingen Office, 209 W. Jackson St., Harlingen, TX. The meeting is free and open to the public and you’re invited to come learn about the Commission and its efforts to preserve the County’s history. For more information call 956-345-4756.

This month’s Good Morning Downtown Coffee is being hosted by Danielle Goslin, Partner New York Life Insurance Company, 222 E. Van Buren Ste. 501 (Fifth Floor) from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2019. This event is a fantastic venue for networking opportunities, it offers a great way to promote your business and learn what’s happening downtown. The Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum and the RGV Museum Association, 2425 Boxwood St., cordially invite you to visit an art exhibit by Alexander Comminos, “On Down the Line.” There is no admission fee to visit the exhibit and the historic buildings but donations are accepted. The museum is open on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00, closed on Monday and open from 10:00 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

The museum’s children’s summer workshops, “Butterfly Bonanza,” will be open to the public from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on June 8, 15, 22, and 29 while supplies last. Registration is not required. The workshops are being sponsored by the City of Harlingen Recycling Center, Heep Nursery, Paradise Gardens, Johnny’s True Value and Monarch Dance Studio.

The Harlingen Public Library, 410 ‘76 Dr. is offering several adult programming classes this month including:

•June 13: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., “Microsoft Word,” Computer Lab

•June 14: 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., “Getting a Job,” Library Auditorium

•June 27: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., “Microsoft Excel,” Computer Lab

The Tip O’ Texas Genealogical Society will meet on the third Thursday of the month during the summer. Meetings are scheduled at the Harlingen Public Library at 10:15 a.m. on June 20, July 18 and August 15. For more information visit the society’s Facebook page.

Some genealogy related news: According to the latest issue of Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter, The German Holocaust Archive has put millions of documents online. The International Tracing Service in Germany has uploaded more than 13 million documents from Nazi concentration camps, including prisoner cards and death notices, to help Holocaust researchers and others investigate the fate of victims.

The ITS, established by the Western Allies in the final days of World War II and initially run by the Red Cross, has announced that it has changed its name to “Arolsen Archives – International Center on Nazi Persecution.” The archive in Bad Arolsen says with help from Israel’s Yad Vashem, documents with information on more than 2.2 million people are now available online.
