SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Starting today, the public can enjoy the features and amenities of the new Sandpiper Pavilion at Isla Blanca Park, including new picnic tables, restrooms, rinse stations, concession areas and BBQ areas.
The pavilion also features a lighted beachfront boardwalk with shaded structures and additional parking areas.
Though not fully completed, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño explained in a press release the pavilion is part of the ongoing renovation projects at Isla Blanca Park.
“Once all the improvements are completed, Isla Blanca Park will be one of the best coastal parks, not only on the Texas Coast, but on the entire coast of the Gulf of Mexico,” he stated. “I’m excited that the Sandpiper Pavilion is completed just in time before the summer break.”
According to the press release, the pavilion is constructed 200 feet landward from the original site, with a conservation system of dunes to protect the structure.
Cameron County Parks Director Joe E. Vega stated the new improvements will also enhance accessibility to the beach, referring to the addition of an ADA-compliant dune walkover.
Sofia C. Benavides, Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 1, hopes many families will enjoy the new pavilion, which is one of the reasons why the County Commissioners Court decided to approve the improvements.
“I’m proud of the work we’ve done to ensure the county reached our intended goal,” she stated in the press release. “We will continue to seek opportunities to improve services and facilities at our parks.”
The new Sandpiper Pavilion is part of the $17 million renovation expenses at Isla Blanca Park, which includes a multipurpose building and an amphitheater among other additions and improvements.
