The Harlingen South Lady Hawks highlighted the 2019 girls soccer season in the Harlingen-San Benito area.
They advanced five rounds in the playoff this season for the first time since 2003.
The Lady Hawks’ success was reflected in the girls All-District 32-6A selections.
South’s Mellory Grannum, a senior forward/midfielder/defender, was chosen as one of three MVPS in 32-6A along with Los Fresnos defender Allison Spier and Brownsville Hanna forward Sytlaly Loyde. All of them are seniors.
The Lady Hawks finished 23-4 after falling to Austin Lake Travis 3-0 in the Region IV-6A Tournament final April 13 at Brownsville Sports Park.
Earlier in the Class 6A playoffs, South defeated Donna North 5-3, McAllen Rowe 3-0, McAllen High 1-0 and Austin Westlake 2-1 in overtime.
South (8-2, 25 points) was the runner-up to Los Fresnos (9-1, 26 points) in 32-6A. Hanna finished third, and Harlingen High was fourth.
The Lady Hawks also received three more of the top all-district honors. South teammates Alise Garza and Jackie Guillen were named the district’s offensive player of the year and defensive player of the year, respectively. Also for South, Sarah Grace Garza shared the 32-6A newcomer of the year honor with Hanna’s Kristy Herrera.
Rounding out the top honors in 32-6A, it was San Benito’s Janie Castellanos as utility player of the year, and Hanna’s Valeria Perez as goalkeeper of the year.
Harlingen High’s Briana Garza earned a spot on the all-district first team as a midfielder.
In District 32-4A, the La Feria Lionettes were among the top recipients of all-district honors.
La Feria captured the 32-4A championship with a 14-0 record. The Lionettes advanced two rounds in the Class 4A playoffs, finishing with a 22-7-1 overall record.
The girls All-District 32-4A selections saw La Feria’s Joscelyn Lizcano named most valuable offensive player. Lyford’s Cecilia Lopez and Port Isabel’s Celia Polsky shared the district’s honor as most valuable defensive player.
The 32-4A newcomer of the year award went to Lyford’s Aleyna Frias.
Lyford was the runner-up to La Feria in the 32-4A girls race. Port Isabel finished third, and Rio Hondo was fourth.
