Lady Falcons’ Garcia signs with York College

Los Fresnos’ Alex Garcia signed her intent to play volleyball at York College on Friday in the lecture hall at Los Fresnos High School.

York, a private four-year school two hours west of Omaha, Neb., competes in NAIA Division II and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Garcia, a defensive specialist, is excited to continue her education and explore outside of her home state. She thanked her parents and coaches during her signing ceremony for allowing her to pursue her dream of playing volleyball in college.

“They were very supportive with my choice,” Garcia said. “They were very happy that I chose to go there.”

She said her recruiting process was long but worthwhile, as she found what she felt was the best academic and athletic fit for her. A coach from York reached out to Garcia via email and expressed interest, which evolved into a dialogue that eventually led her to make her decision.

“I wanted to go to a school that was good, and where I liked the team also, “ Garcia said. “It took a while, but I’m really happy with my decision.”

Los Fresnos volleyball coach Becky Woods said Garcia’s relentless effort during her tenure with the Lady Falcons will serve her well playing at the next level. Garcia played primarily in the back row for Woods in high school, but also had some experience as an outside hitter.

“She wanted to make no errors on the court,” Woods said. “She wanted to play the best she could play every single time she was on the court. She gave 110 percent every time. She never missed a practice. And I knew then, she really had a desire (to excel at the next level.)”
